Gym Design

Effective space planning is an essential part of any commercial gym.

We have an in house gym designer to prepare scale drawings and work with your architect or interior designer and we can also supply 3D layouts so you can get a real feel for what your gym will look like.

Fancy designing your own gym? Have a play with the GymCompany Gym Planner. We've included a large range of our best selling items so you can quickly work out how many pieces of equipment will fit in your gym.

Vital considerations for any gym design:

Safety of your users

Equipment must be laid out in accordance with Health & Safety guidelines, providing clear escape routes and adequate spacing to minimise risk of injury.

Concurrent user numbers

How many users can be in the gym at any one time? This number affects many parts of your business including membership sales.

Equipment grouping

How will your users from machine to machine? A bodybuilding gym might group strength machines by body part whereas a corporate gym might mix cardio and strength together to encourage users to make use of every piece of equipment.

Aesthetics

What do you want your gym to look like? A modern healthclub targeting young professionals will have a different look and feel to a rural ladies only gym with mostly middle aged users.

TV Screens and Mirrors

Strategic placement of mirrors will encourage better training technique and create an illusion of space.

TV screens are used in many gyms to provide entertainment for cardio users.

How many screens do you need and where will you put them?

Equipment power requirements: Some machine, like treadmills require power and these should be positioned as close as possible to your sockets.

Weight restrictions

What is the weight limit for your floor? If you are working with a concrete sub floor you probably won't need to think about this. If you are using a suspended floor or mezzanine level this is an important consideration.

Ceiling height

What is the overall ceiling height? Are there any areas where the ceiling is lower than others? Some pieces of equipment require a lot of head space. For example: a power rack may be 210cm tall but it also requires 45cm of clear space above for users doing pull ups.
